The Camp America Application Process Explained - The Summer Camp Rookie Ep. 5

What support do Camp America participants receive while they're in the USA? In this episode of The Summer Camp Rookie, Camp America's US team explains how they support participants throughout the summer, from travel delays and homesickness to insurance questions, emergencies, and everything in between.

What Support Does Camp America Provide in the USA?

One of the biggest concerns for first-time participants is knowing what happens if something goes wrong while they're in America.

What if your flight is delayed? What if you get homesick? What if you need medical help? What if you're travelling alone for the first time?

In this episode of The Summer Camp Rookie, we sit down with members of Camp America's US team to explore the support available throughout the summer and explain why participants are never alone during their Camp America experience.

Does Camp America Have Staff in America?

Yes.

Camp America has a dedicated US team that works directly with camps across the country and supports participants throughout the summer. While the UK team helps participants through the application and placement process, the US team is there once participants arrive in America.

The team works with hundreds of summer camps across the United States and provides support for both participants and camp directors throughout the season.

What Kind of Support Is Available?

The US team helps with a wide range of issues, including:

  • Travel delays and missed connections
  • Transport to camp
  • Homesickness and emotional support
  • Medical and insurance questions
  • Emergency situations
  • Advice for camp staff and participants
  • General questions throughout the summer

Participants can contact the team whenever they need help, guidance, or reassurance.

What Happens If My Flight Is Delayed?

Travel issues are one of the most common reasons participants contact the US team.

Whether it's a delayed flight, missed connection, or confusion during travel, the team helps participants navigate the situation, communicate with camp directors, and make sure they arrive safely at camp.

For many participants, it's their first time travelling internationally on their own, so having support available can make a huge difference.

Can Camp America Help With Homesickness?

Absolutely.

Homesickness is a normal part of spending time away from home, especially during the first few weeks of camp. The US team regularly supports participants experiencing homesickness and can also provide advice to camp directors on how to help staff settle into camp life.

Many participants who struggle initially go on to have incredible summers once they've worked through those early challenges.

Is Camp America Support Available 24/7?

Yes.

Camp America's US support team operates around the clock during the summer. If participants need urgent assistance outside normal office hours, there is always someone available to help.

That's particularly reassuring for participants who are travelling independently or experiencing issues while at camp.

What About Health Insurance?

Camp America participants receive medical insurance coverage during their time at camp and their post-camp travel period. The US team also helps participants understand how healthcare works in America and what to do if they need medical attention during the summer.

Do People Really Contact Support?

All the time.

From practical questions and travel concerns to homesickness, medical queries, and unexpected situations, the support team has seen just about everything over the years. Their advice is simple: if you're unsure about something, reach out.

Why Is Camp America's Support Different?

One of the things that makes Camp America unique is having experienced camp professionals based in both the UK and the USA.

Many members of the team have been camp counsellors, activity specialists, camp directors, or Camp America participants themselves. That means the people supporting participants understand exactly what camp life is like and the challenges that can come with it.
